How it started - Chapter-1

“Don't leave me” she cried holding my hands. Although she was my best friend and she is the one whom I like very much but, how can I believe when she was trying to stop me when I wanted go to London for higher studies.
All my thoughts, dreams and hope was to be a good business man. She will know all my hopes, first of all what I wanted to be in future. She is the one who supported me to achieve, but today…….
She is forcing me to stop my studies by telling me that she wants to live her life with me. I have been telling her several times that “I will return soon after my studies” but her answer was same “I want to be with you, please don't leave me!”
At the age of 13, I was a mischievous boy, I never thought about my future but when I met her in a cinema and when I became a friend of her at the age of 14 she always told me to think about my future.
She tried her best to make me reach the top, as a result today I am ready to leave for Ph.D. she changed me so much that she wants me to start a life with her.
Her words have changed, now, instead of telling “love and knowledge make life easier and happier” she is telling “love and hard work makes life easier and happier”
I have many questions to ask her but every time when I see her she only tells that she loves me, she even didn't gave me a second to think and say any thing.
Any ways I wanted to study more to make my dreams come true. So I aimed to go London for higher studies even though she was trying to stop me I decided to start my journey on Sunday but I kept it as secret from her because I know she would be so miserable if she knew it.
On 26th December2004 I woke up very late at 7:20. It was the day I would part from all my friends for 2 years. I had many friends to visit so I started visiting one by one. At last it was the time to visit my best friend, the one whom I like so much, I left my house to visit Reesham, and it was 9:15 that time. She was at the play ground. We both went away from the people and I told her that I was going to leave the island at9:45 she cried and I too was really sad.
She came with me to my house and we both talked for some time. We were sitting at the sitting room we heard shouts of people from out side I thought something treble had happened, we ran to the road when I looked at the beachside I saw many people running towards us, at the back of them there were big waves with full of wastes. The water was washing away everything around. I noticed my father among people who were running, I ran to him leaving Reesham, and I started pulling his arms. When we came to the place were Reesham was standing I called her and told her to come with us. We were too slow to walk when a big wave engulfed us. I was holding my fathers hand as well as Reesham's hand but the big wave hit me and separated all three of us.
After few minutes we landed at a small uninhabited island near my island. I searched every where for Reesham but I could not find any sign of her. I was so up set that she did not know to swim. Very soon the rescue people came and took us to an island which was completely destroyed; they told that most islands of Maldives were in the same condition. We started living in that island. We got help from the government but my father wanted to live in “Hulhumal'e” because he has two shops there so he can live there comfortably. The days we spent in the island I asked the people who brought us from our island if they had seen Reesham, but the only answer I got was that all members of her family were dead in the Tsunami disaster. I was sad to hear the answer, I couldn't believe it but even though I believe it or not the truth will never change.
We changed to “Hulhumal'e” my father bought a house there. Day by day our life became normal but we could not forget the scariest days of our lives, it was a day which stopped me from achieving my hopes and dreams also that was the day when I lost my best friend, Reesham.
After 5 months I left my country to complete my studies. It was also a 26th but not December. Even though I left Maldives I didn't change my behavior as a result some times I faced problems.
In a few days I started my studies; also I got few friends, but not a close friend like Reesham. I remember her every time I meet my friends especially when we have fun. Every time I call my father I asked him if he heard any news about Reesham. Even though his answer was “no” I had the feelings that some day I will see her…….
